As we become more experienced, certainty can become one of our greatest strengths. We have seen problems before. We have worked with different people, different clients, and different situations. We have made mistakes, learned lessons, and developed our own ways of doing things. So when someone comes to us with a problem, our instinct can be very quick: “I know this. I’ve seen this before. I know what you should do.”

That's exactly where we need to pause.

If we decided to serve others to multiply our impact, we need to make room for others in our minds. Humility is the door that invites others into our minds

We begin by recognising that my knowledge is incomplete, my experience is limited, and my perspective is only one perspective. Instead of assuming that we already understand others' needs, we become willing to ask, “Help me understand your needs.”

Humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves. It does not mean denying our experience, hiding our expertise, or pretending that our accomplishments don't matter. After decades of work, we should acknowledge what we have learned and the value we can bring.

The question is: how should we utilize what we have accumulated to become a humble serving power? Our experience can become a trophy we protect, or it can become a resource we share. Our knowledge can become a source of status, or it can become a source of service. Our influence can become a way to elevate ourselves, or it can become a way to elevate others.
