Four Principles to Define Persona Design Problem Statement
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A problem statement is a clear, concise description of an issue that needs to be addressed or a condition that needs to be improved. It defines the gap between the current state (the reality) and the desired state (the goal),
A problem statement serves as the starting point for problem-solving in design thinking.
Before you can design a new persona, you have to define the problem you are actually trying to solve.
This sounds obvious, but it is one of the easiest steps to get wrong.
When people think about changing themselves, they usually start with a vision:
"I want to become a better leader."
"I want to be more strategic."
"I want people to see me as an innovative thinker."
"I want to become a more empathetic listener."
These are valuable aspirations. But they are not yet design problems.
A vision tells us where we want to go.
But a persona design problem statement tells us why we are not there yet, what is happening instead, and where the transformation needs to occur.
This distinction matters because you cannot design an effective persona shift from an abstract aspiration. You need to understand the friction between your intended persona and your lived persona.
In this episode, we will set four principles to help us to define a Persona Design Problem Statement.
